Safety performance is one of our greatest strengths and one we value highly. We have intensified our commitment to safety with the introduction of People-Based Safety. This is an approach that encourages behavioural change by our entire workforce towards actively caring for one another, the environment and the workplace and, in so doing, creating a Total Safety Culture.

We believe that safety goes beyond statistics and reporting. People-Based Safety substitutes compliance, enforcement and zero tolerance with empowerment, ownership and interpersonal trust, enriching the culture within which we work and advancing our safety performance.

A Total Safety Culture has four characteristics:

  • Safety is held as a value by all employees (a value directs decisions and actions and safety as a value ensures that it is a proactive driver of decisions).
  • Each person feels responsible for the safety of their co-workers as well as for themselves.
  • Each individual is willing and able to 'go beyond the call of duty' on behalf of the safety of others (actively caring for people).
  • Each person routinely performs actively caring and safety behaviours for the benefit of others.
