DRA Technical Services’ mechanical and electrical engineers have extensive experience in and knowledge of winder engineering and safety. Our team, based in South Africa offers the local and international mining industry a comprehensive electrical and mechanical service for hoisting gear. We are a professional outfit able to undertake turnkey or EPCM (engineering, procurement, construction and management) contracts.

In addition to general services such as accident/failure investigations; technical audits and risk assessments; audits of proposed designs; drafting of maintenance and testing procedures, procuring winders and winder-related equipment; upgrade projects, fault finding and diagnosis, we are able to provide specialist expertise in:  new winder projects, winder refurbishment and upgrades, training, and control systems engineering.

Where a project requires a new winder we offer the following services:

  • duty cycle calculations
  • drum shell, drum shaft and brake component design and stress calculations
  • design and specification of safety circuit and control systems
  • design capabilities for automated loading and winding systems, including automated man winding
  • PLC software development
  • functional and design specifications
  • winding rope, machine and drive system selection
  • shaft and headgear design
  • project management
  • quality assurance and final acceptance

DRA Technical Services has established a sound reputation and track record, both locally and internationally, for rebuilding and modernising existing winders. We run a series of training courses, both in-house and on client premises to help the responsible engineers understand and build confidence in the complex machinery and safety systems that make a reliable mine winder. These courses cover electrical and mechanical winders, Lilly controllers and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Software engineering forms a vital part of our business and we design software for position control, safety, automation, SCADA and the man-machine interface. Our engineers are highly qualified and experienced, often helping out during breakdown situations.

We take care to evaluate each client’s needs in order to deliver an optimal, practical solution.
